The first hour after a baby is born is crucial, not only for baby, but also for mom. Woman’s Hospital knows the importance of this special time and have implemented Magic Hour after birth. During Magic Hour, baby is placed on mom’s bare chest for skin-to-skin contact, allowing the two to spend the hour bonding and relaxing. Mom can count each finger and toe and talk to her little one as they get to know one another, and dad is also encouraged to participate. Visitors are asked to hold off on entering the room until after the hour is over as this time is beneficial for mom, dad, and their new bundle of joy. Angela Hammett, Community Education Manager & Natural Birth Liaison of Woman’s Hospital, says that this time allows for body system regulation, promotes delayed cord clamping, improves breastfeeding success rates, and promotes mother-baby attachment.
