After being safe at home for well over a month, dreaming about a future beach trip may be on the top of your mind. However, when it finally becomes time to pack for the trip of your dreams, you will want to make sure you have the right sunscreen to bring. Physical blockers, also known as mineral sunscreens, contain active mineral ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide. These sit on the surface of the skin and deflect and scatter damaging UVA rays. And, they’re the ones you will want to have in your beach bag. “Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are the only two sunscreen ingredients that currently meet the FDA criteria for being considered Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective,” says Denis K. Dudley MD, OB/GYN and founder of The Sunscreen Company. “They never enter through intact skin, have no adverse effects on humans or the environment, and arguably give better broad spectrum protection.”
